Almost 1 og 4 Norwegians consider themselves disturbed by NOISE at home. Road traffic is responsible for about 70 % of environmental noise.

Other major sources are trains, aircraft, industry, construction sites, harbours, motor sport and shooting ranges.

In recent years a change of attitude has taken place. More and more, NOISE is seen as an important factor in people's lives. We find this growing awareness among the general public and in the work place. The authorities have issued new regulations, which are more consistently followed up. People now find that noise problems, rather than just "being there" can be dealt with. To avoid new conflicts, planning and careful engineering is necessary.

However, reducing noise is not simple. In 1999, the Norwegian Parliament established a goal to reduce annoyance from environmental noise by 25 % within 2010. This has turned out to be too ambitious. In 2008, the goal was adjusted to a 10 % reduction within 2020.

Even to achieve this rather modest goal, careful planning and a high focus on the issue will be necessary.
